Resin splicing kits are used to insulate the cable bifurcations of cathodic protection systems and can be of two-way, three-way, four-way, etc. depending on the application.
In areas of pipelines used to insulate two parts of the pipe from the insulation kit at the flange, there may be a large potential difference between the two parts of the flange as a result of induction or the occurrence of lightning, resulting in degraded flange insulation. In this points, zinc anodes are used as ground electrodes to prevent such problems. The zinc earthing cell is both a damper for the upstream currents and an earth type, thereby reducing the protective current loss and on the other hand, due to the natural property of the metal, it acts as an anode and slightly improves the potential loss.
Usually, the equipment of the earth connection system is uncoated and causes leakage currents in the vicinity of the cathodic protection system. This affects the performance of the cathodic protection system and reduces its efficiency.
Spark gap is installed on flanges with insulation kits. Gaskets (middle insulation gaskets) have insulation kits up to a certain voltage and may be damaged by lightning or possible faults. Therefore spark gap is used to protect the gasket.
The most common method for connecting cables to pipes in cathodic protection is the use of thermite weld, commonly known as the cad weld. The equipment required for thermite weld is as follows:
Pin brazing is one of the methods of connecting cable to pipe in cathodic protection. The method of connection by pin brazing device is that by making an arc between the pin and the structure, the silver alloy of pin surface is fused and the cable is connected to the structure. To connect the pin to the structure of an arc with a temperature of 700 °C is required. Since the pins are silver plated, the connection will have low electrical resistance.
Areas where cable is connected to structure and in contact with electrolytes (soil, water, etc.) are more vulnerable to corrosion due to the current flow. Therefore, primer and handy cap are used to repair the coating of these areas. Primer and handy cap are oil based materials. The primer is available in two types of liquid (liter) and spray, and Handy cap comes in both simple and IP (with internal primer).
