Cad Weld Equipment
The most common method for connecting cables to pipes in cathodic protection is the use of thermite weld, commonly known as the cad weld. The equipment required for thermite weld is as follows:
- Thermite weld mold: The material of thermite weld mold is graphite and depending on the size of the cable and the structural shape, there are various types such as flat floor, semicircle, etc. (in the case of pipes, pipe diameter is the type of welding mold). Due to the graphite material of the welding mold and the conditions of use, its service life is different and usually 50 to 100 times the thermite weld can be optimized.
- Welding powder: Welding powder is made of sulfur, copper powder, etc. and is available in different weights such as 15, 25, 32, 45 depending on the type of mold and its size. Some welding powders are accompanied by a wick.
- Sequin: The sequin is used to connect the cable to the structure and to cover the welding area.
- Cleaning tools: After each welding, the welding mold should be cleaned with cleaning tools such as wire brush, spatula, etc.
- Combustion lighter: Combustion lighter is used for combustion of welding powder.
