Spark Gaps
Spark gap is installed on flanges with insulation kits. Gaskets (middle insulation gaskets) have insulation kits up to a certain voltage and may be damaged by lightning or possible faults. Therefore spark gap is used to protect the gasket.
The function of spark gap is that when the lightning or fault occurs (increasing the potential difference between the two flange edges), it blocks the current path from its path and prevents the insulation kit being damaged. Another use of spark gap is to prevent sparks on two flange edges, which is very important to prevent in potentially explosive environments. Spark gaps are manufactured in two types of conventional and explosion proof with different current ranges. The difference between the use of this equipment and the zinc earthing cell (ZEC) is the passage of current shocks.
