Silver/ Silver Chloride Reference Electrodes

الکترودهای مرجع نقره/ کلرید نقره

The silver/ silver chloride reference electrodes consist of a silver electrode whose surface is coated with silver chloride by thermal or electrolytic methods. These electrodes show a high degree of stability. The silver/ silver chloride reference electrode is used directly in seawater or saline river water. In other applications such as steel in concrete, is used silver/ silver chloride/ potassium chloride reference electrode.

The electrodes used in seawater are mechanically shielded in tight containers and holes are created to make contact with the electrolyte. These electrodes shall be immersed in seawater for several hours before use to stabilize them. The cable end of the electrodes is well insulated to prevent short circuiting.

Silver/ silver chloride reference electrodes when not in use, recommended by manufacturers for some of their types should be kept in a saturated solution of potassium chloride. The accuracy of the potential measurement using the silver/ silver chloride reference electrode in seawater is about ±5 mV, which is a very high accuracy.
