Polarization Coupons
Polarization coupons are a means of measuring the amount of polarization potential. Given that instant off potential is usually used to measure the potential of structures interface with electrolyte (soil, water, etc.) or the same polarizing potential, for the cathodic protection system consists of several transformer rectifiers but the synchronization capabilities of transformer rectifiers are not available, polarization coupons are used.
Polarization coupons usually consist of a PVC box, a steel piece similar to the structure under protection (in terms of chemical composition and manufacturing process), a connecting cable, and an epoxy resin. Their function is that the steel piece used in the coupon is connected to the cathodic protection system by a connecting cable, and during the test, instead of switch off and switch on the transformer rectifiers, the connecting cable of polarization coupon is disconnected from the system and the potential of the steel piece is measured. Because the polarization coupon behaves similar to the protected structure, the measured potential represents the potential of the protected structure and, consequently, the cathodic protection level of the structure.
