In oil, gas, petrochemical and other industries, transformer rectifiers sometimes need to be installed in hazardous areas. Equipment for these conditions must be manufactured in accordance with IEC 60079.

In these units, the main transformer, rectifier and associated filters are immersed in the oil tank, using protection type Ex o. Protective equipment, electronic controls and measuring equipment are installed in Ex d enclosures, or another protection type if requested. Voltmeters, ammeters and similar instruments are housed in explosion-proof enclosures with transparent viewing windows. Cables enter and leave through explosion-proof glands with the same Ex d protection type.
