Heat Exchangers, Boilers and Condensers Cathodic Protection

حفاظت کاتدی مبدل‌های حرارتی، بویلرها و کندانسورها

Heat exchangers, boilers and condensers are important equipment in the power plant, refinery and petrochemical industries. This equipment is susceptible to corrosion due to high operating pressure and temperature and it has been observed in many cases that corrosion of parts of this equipment results in failure of the entire machine and the entire production cycle. Therefore, corrosion protection of these equipment is indispensable in the industry.

Cathodic protection for heat exchangers, boilers and condensers is used as an independent method method and is usually used as a sacrificial anode due to the lack of electricity and ease of installation. The anodes used in this method are usually magnesium or zinc, which is the most commonly used magnesium anode due to its higher current capacity and no limitation on operating temperature. The limitation of the application of zinc anode is related to the relative potential between iron (cathode) and zinc (anode) which decreases with increasing temperature. In some waters, temperatures above 50 ° C change the polarity between iron and zinc. This means that zinc is potentially cathodic than iron and is not only able to protect the iron in a sacrificial manner but also corrodes it faster. Therefore, in heat exchangers, boilers and condensers with operating temperatures above 60 ° C shall not be used for iron protection.
